Center for Independent Living
About
Center for Independent Living is a nonprofit located in Winter Park, FL in Seminole County in the greater Orlando area. The organization was founded by Central Floridians dedicated to helping people with disabilities achieve their self-determined goals for independent living.
CIL is a cross-disability service agency with a mission to create opportunities for disability inclusion. It serves individuals with any type of disability of any age residing in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Polk, Hardee, Highlands, and DeSoto counties. CIL has two office locations, one in Winter Park and the other in Lakeland, serving the Central Florida region, each of which have specific programs and services available to their surrounding community.
CIL believes that every person deserves the right to live their lives the way they choose. When the organization surveys the Central Florida community, they identify five core areas where inclusion can be measured: Access to Valuable Employment, Adaptive & Assistive Technology, Affordable and Safe Housing, Access to Transportation, and the Ability to Self-Advocate.
Since the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed in 1990, Central Florida has made great progress towards becoming more inclusive. Men and women can see this every day in their own neighborhood: sidewalk ramps, audible crosswalks, designated parking spaces, closed captions, and so much more. By growing our community with inclusion and acceptance for people with disabilities in mind, CIL believes we can create accessible communities that will benefit everyone.
